Saint-Samson Cathedral
Saint-Samson is a massive, fortress-like cathedral that anchors the historic center of Dol-de-Bretagne. Rebuilt in the 13th century after a devastating fire, it is a rare example of Norman Gothic style in Brittany, constructed from rugged local granite.
The Great Glass of the Choir
Inside, the cathedral holds one of Brittany's oldest treasures: the great 13th-century stained-glass window in the choir. It depicts the life of Saint Samson, the Welsh monk who founded the town in the 6th century. The interior is long and narrow, creating an atmospheric tunnel of ancient stone and colorful light.
A Monument to Power
For centuries, this building was the seat of a powerful bishopric that influenced the entire region. From its unfinished towers to the medieval wooden choir stalls, the cathedral reflects a history of resilience against wars, storms, and political upheaval.
