Saint Michael’s Church
Saint Michael’s is widely recognized as the oldest surviving place of worship in Luxembourg City. Its history dates back to 987, when Count Siegfried established a castle chapel on the Bock promontory, marking the official birth of the city and the Luxembourg dynasty.
An Architectural Hybrid
The church has been destroyed and rebuilt numerous times during various sieges. Today, it combines Romanesque foundations with late Gothic vaults and an impressive Baroque high altar. Its unique onion-domed bell tower is a landmark of the Old Town's skyline.
Heart of the Historic Center
Located next to the historic Fish Market (Marché-aux-Poissons), the church reflects the evolution of the city from a fortress to a capital. Inside, the 17th-century woodwork and the coat of arms of former governors highlight the site's historical prestige and its survival through the French Revolution.
