Notre-Dame Cathedral

Notre-Dame Cathedral is the most significant religious structure in Luxembourg City. Originally a Jesuit church founded in 1613, it was elevated to cathedral status in 1870. The building is a unique architectural hybrid of late Gothic and Renaissance styles.

The Grand Ducal Crypt

The crypt is the final resting place for the Grand Ducal family. Guarded by bronze lions, it contains the sarcophagi of historical figures like John the Blind and Grand Duchess Charlotte. It serves as a focal point for national mourning and remembrance ceremonies.

Expansion and Art

The cathedral was significantly enlarged between 1935 and 1938. This expansion added a new transept and choir while preserving the historic character of the nave. The interior is noted for its 20th-century stained glass windows and the "Consoler of the Afflicted" statue, which draws thousands during the annual Octave pilgrimage.
