Ceramics & River Bends

J ust across the German border, Mettlach is one of those spots that often gets overlooked, but honestly, it’s a perfect day trip. We spent a day there recently, and the mix of river landscapes and artisanal history is just right.

We started with a quiet walk around Ziegelberg Castle. You can’t go inside, but the grounds are so peaceful—it’s the kind of hidden gem where you can just stop and breathe for a minute. Then, we headed to the Villeroy & Boch headquarters. It’s housed in an old abbey, and even if you aren't a "design person," the museum and the Baroque gardens are definitely worth seeing. Plus, the outlet store is a great place to hunt for ceramics.

The real highlight, though, was the Saarschleife. Seeing the Saar River loop in a perfect horseshoe from the Cloef lookout is something else. We took the Baumwipfelpfad (the tree-top walk), which leads you right above the forest canopy. The 360-degree view at the top is absolutely breathtaking, especially when the light starts to soften.

We ended the day in a small local café with some warm drinks. It’s got that slow-paced German charm that makes you feel instantly relaxed. If you're looking for a mix of art, heritage, and nature—all within an hour of Luxembourg—Mettlach is a solid choice.
