Dunkirk Maritime Museum
The Dunkirk Maritime Museum (Musée Maritime et Portuaire) isn't your typical dusty gallery. Housed in a 19th-century tobacco warehouse in the Citadelle district, it focuses on the gritty reality of a port city. It covers everything from the early days of cod fishing in Icelandic waters to the massive industrial complex Dunkirk is today.
The Iron Giants
The main draw here is the Duchesse Anne. She’s a 1901 three-masted training ship, and she’s huge. You can walk the decks and go below into the cramped quarters where cadets lived. Right behind her is the Sandettié, a bright red lightship. These "fire boats" were anchored for months on end in the North Sea to warn others of sandbanks.
War and Port Life
Beyond the ships, the museum handles the 1940 Dynamo Operation with a focus on the port’s technical survival. It’s not just about the battle; it’s about how the dockworkers kept things moving under fire. The galleries are packed with heavy machinery, diving gear, and scale models that show the sheer scale of the post-war reconstruction.
