Church of Saints Peter and Paul
Perched on a hill overlooking the town, the Church of Saints Peter and Paul is the oldest parish church in Echternach. Built on the site of a Roman castellum, it has served as a central place of worship for the local community since the early Christian era.
Medieval Frescoes and Roman Walls
The interior is home to remarkable Romanesque frescoes dating from the 11th and 12th centuries, discovered during restoration work. These paintings, along with the church's solid Romanesque-Gothic architecture, offer a stark contrast to the nearby Baroque elements of the town’s larger Basilica.
A Sanctuary of Simplicity
While the Abbey of Echternach was the center for monastic life, Saints Peter and Paul remained the church of the townspeople. Its restraint and historical layers—from Merovingian roots to its 18th-century ceiling—make it one of the most authentic historical sites in the Guttland region.
