Beaufort Castles
Medieval ruins and Renaissance elegance.
Located in the heart of the Müllerthal, Beaufort is unique for having two distinct castles on one site. The first is the 11th-century fortress, which stands today as a majestic ruin. It wasn't destroyed in battle; it was simply phased out after the 1500s when the owners moved into a more modern residence built just a few meters away.
Exploring the Ruins
The medieval ruins are open for exploration without the constraints of a guided tour. You can climb the original spiral staircases and walk through the old living quarters at your own pace. It is a raw experience that shows how the massive sandstone blocks have integrated with the forest over the last nine centuries.
The Renaissance Heritage
Next to the ruins sits the Renaissance castle, which was inhabited as a private home until 2012. The interior is fully furnished and provides a sharp contrast to the fortress next door. A visit here is traditionally tied to a tasting of Cassero, a blackcurrant liqueur produced on the estate. It is a craft that has been maintained at Beaufort since the 1930s.
Beaufort remains one of the most honest historical sites in Luxembourg. It offers a clear look at the evolution of European architecture, from a defensive stronghold to a refined manor house.
