Our Family Adventure

B asel was a surprise. People always talk about Zurich or Geneva, but Basel has this weirdly cool vibe where everything is impeccably clean (it is Switzerland, after all) but also full of soul. It sits right where Switzerland, France, and Germany meet, and you can really feel that mix of cultures.

The first thing we did was head to the Rhine. In the summer, people float down the river with waterproof bags, but even in the cooler months, just walking along the banks is the heart of the experience. The city feels rich—not just in money, but in history. The red sandstone of the Cathedral (the Münster) is stunning, and the old town is so well-preserved it feels like walking through a postcard.

Let’s talk about the Swiss price tag. Yes, it’s expensive. A coffee will make you double-check your bank account. But here’s the trick: Basel gives back. If you stay in a hotel or Airbnb, you get the BaselCard, which makes all public transport free. It’s those little things that make the "Luxus" experience feel smart rather than just pricey.

We spent hours just getting lost in the hilly streets of the old town, finding hidden fountains and tiny art galleries. It’s a city that’s quiet but never boring. It’s peaceful, safe, and honestly, after a few days, you start to get used to that high-end Swiss rhythm.

If you’re looking for a spot that’s easy to manage with kids but still feels like a "real" sophisticated getaway, Basel is it. It’s organized, it’s beautiful, and it just works.

Family-Approved Tips

  • The Ferry (Fähri): You have to try the little wooden ferries that cross the Rhine. They don’t use motors; they just use the river's current. It’s silent, cheap, and the kids loved it.
  • The BaselCard: Use it! Free transport and 50% off the Zoo (which is world-class, by the way).

Good to Know

The Border Hack: We stayed on the French side (Saint-Louis). It’s a total game-changer for the budget. You’re only 10 minutes away by tram, but you pay French prices for hotels and food.
Tram Life: The tram system is incredible. Even crossing from France into Switzerland is seamless. Download the "BVB" app to manage your tickets easily if your hotel doesn't provide a travel pass.
