Where History Meets the Present

G hent is one of those cities that just feels alive. We recently had the chance to explore it (thanks to the tourist office for the tips!), and honestly, it’s the perfect mix of "ancient" and "cool." You’ve got these massive medieval buildings everywhere, but the vibe is super young and vibrant because of the student life.

Walking through the center feels like stepping back a few centuries. The Gravensteen Castle is just imposing—it’s this huge stone fortress right in the middle of the city. Then you have the canals, especially around Graslei and Korenlei. It’s definitely the most photographed spot in town for a reason; those Gothic façades reflecting in the water are something else.

If you're into art, Saint Bavo’s Cathedral is a must for the Ghent Altarpiece, but we also loved just wandering into neighborhoods like Patershol. It’s quieter, full of narrow cobblestone streets and hidden courtyards. It’s the kind of place where you stop for a coffee or a local craft beer and just watch the world go by.

Ghent isn't just about museums, though. It's a food heaven. From waffles on the street to great vegetarian spots in Het Zuid, you can't really go wrong. The best way to see it? Rent a bike or hop on a boat tour. Seeing the city from the water gives you a totally different perspective on all those medieval towers. It’s easily one of Flanders’ best-kept secrets.
