BELGIUM • WITCHES & NATURE

ielsalm is exactly why we love road-tripping through Belgium. It’s one of those spots where you can just pull over and instantly feel "disconnected." Surrounded by thick forests and rolling hills, it’s got that raw, authentic Ardennes vibe that’s becoming harder to find.
The town takes its name from the Salm River, and you can tell the place has some serious history. We stumbled upon a cool little castle right across from the church—it’s a restaurant now, but it still has that medieval look that adds so much character to the center.
What’s really unique here is the Coticule stone. It’s known as the "razor stone" and was famous worldwide for sharpening blades. It’s crazy to think this small village was a global hub for such a specific craft.
But the best part? The Macralles. Vielsalm is the land of witches. Every July 21st, the town throws a massive sabbath festival. It’s quirky, a bit mysterious, and the kids absolutely love it. Between the legends and the endless hiking trails, it’s the perfect place to just unwind as a family without any fuss. If you’re passing through the region, don’t skip it—it’s a hidden gem that’s actually worth the detour.
