More than just old stones

T o be honest, we didn’t expect Orval to hit us this hard. We went there thinking "okay, another old building," but what we found was something else entirely. There's this vibe there—a peaceful energy that just slows you down the second you walk in. It’s tucked away in the Gaume forest, and the silence isn't awkward; it’s actually relaxing.

The history is everywhere, but it's the Countess Matilda story that stuck with the kids. Losing a wedding ring in a spring and having a trout bring it back? It sounds like a movie, but seeing the trout symbol all over the abbey makes it feel real.

We got lucky and had Victor as our guide. You can tell when someone actually loves what they do. He wasn't just reciting facts; he was telling a story. He made the 11th-century ruins feel alive again. Today, the place is a mix of destroyed arches and 20th-century walls, and that contrast is exactly what gives it so much soul.

It’s also pretty cool to realize the place is still "active." 40 monks live there in total silence. You don't see them, but you see their work: that legendary beer and the creamy cheese (which is honestly incredible). The kids spent the afternoon climbing around the ruins and hunting for fish in the spring while we finally caught our breath. It’s rare to find a spot that’s an adventure for them and a total "reset" button for us.
