D unkirk really caught us by surprise. The moment we stepped out, you just feel it—the sea, the wind, and that heavy port atmosphere. It’s a city that doesn't just sit by the water; it actually grows from it. We spent a lot of time just watching the massive ships with the kids, feeling the scale of the place.

You can't escape the history here. Operation Dynamo is everywhere. Visiting the memorials and the beaches where the soldiers were evacuated... it hits different when you're standing there. I had to explain it to the kids, trying to find the right words for that kind of courage. It felt real, not like a history book.

The beach is huge. Wide, open, and honestly, so peaceful. Even with the wind biting, letting the kids just sprint across the sand was exactly what we needed. But, I’ll be honest—visiting during the holidays was a gamble. A lot of doors were closed. Museums, restaurants, family spots... shut. The city was quiet. Maybe a bit too quiet at times.

We missed out on Malo-les-Bains, which sucks because everyone raves about it. But we made the most of it. We wandered the center, stared up at the beffroi, and just watched the harbor life. Dunkirk isn't about glitter or tourist traps. It’s authentic. It tells its story in a low voice, and if you actually stop to listen, the memories you take home feel a lot more meaningful. Simple as that.
