Urban and Geological Context
Echternach is the oldest town in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. It is located at the intersection of the Sûre river valley and the Mullerthal sandstone plateau. The town’s foundations overlay a 1st-century Roman villa, which serves as the largest archaeological site of its type in the northern Alps.
The Monastic Complex
The Benedictine Abbey was founded in 698 AD by Saint Willibrord. During the 11th century, it became an influential center for European illumination. The urban layout remains centered on the historical Abbey Square, maintaining architectural continuity across twelve centuries of regional history.
