Basilica of Saint Willibrord
The Basilica of Saint Willibrord is the premier religious monument of Echternach. Built over the burial site of the Northumbrian saint who founded the town’s abbey in 698 AD, the current Romanesque structure is a faithful post-WWII reconstruction of its medieval predecessor.
The Merovingian Crypt
Beneath the main altar lies the 8th-century crypt, which survived the heavy bombings of 1944. It houses the neo-Gothic marble sarcophagus of Saint Willibrord and features ancient Merovingian stonework and 11th-century frescoes. It remains a major site of pilgrimage, particularly during the annual "Dancing Procession."
History and Restoration
The basilica's architecture reflects the resilience of the Guttland region. Following near-total destruction in the Battle of the Bulge, the church was rebuilt to emphasize its 11th-century Romanesque roots. Today, it stands as a testament to European monastic history and the cultural identity of Luxembourg’s oldest town.
