Mont-Saint-Michel Abbey

Mont-Saint-Michel is a masterpiece of medieval engineering. Built on a granite outcrop surrounded by the highest tides in Europe, the abbey is a vertical labyrinth that blends Romanesque foundations with the soaring Gothic "Merveille."

The Unconquerable Fortress

Known as a spiritual lighthouse, the mount was also a formidable fortress. During the Hundred Years' War, it successfully resisted English sieges for three decades. Later, it served a darker purpose as a prison during the French Revolution, earning the nickname "the Bastille of the Seas."

A Living Legacy

The Abbey remains a living monument, home to a permanent monastic community. The architectural layout consists of two three-story blocks perched precariously on the rock. As the tides transform the bay twice daily, the abbey stands as a timeless symbol of Normandy’s resilience.
