Notre-Dame Church Vitré | Flamboyant Gothic & Outdoor Pulpit
Flamboyant Gothic • France

Notre-Dame de Vitré

Notre-Dame de Vitré is a heavy granite statement of 15th-century wealth. Built by the local "Merchants of the Overseas," it dominates the medieval center with sharp Flamboyant Gothic facades.

The Rare External Pulpit

A standout feature is the stone pulpit built into the church's south wall. It was used during the 16th-century religious conflicts, allowing priests to preach directly to the crowds in the square when the interior was full. It is one of the few surviving examples of its kind in France.

Renaissance Glasswork

Inside, the highlight is the 1537 Renaissance stained-glass window showing the life of the Virgin Mary. Surviving centuries of war, it remains a masterpiece of Breton art, set against massive granite pillars that still bear the marks of medieval stonemasons.
