Larochette Castle
A 11th-century fortress standing over the valley.
Rising from a sandstone promontory, Larochette Castle overlooks the valley of the White Ernz. While its origins go back to the 11th century, a massive fire in 1565 left the site in ruins for hundreds of years. Today, it remains one of the most visually dominant fortresses in Luxembourg’s "Little Switzerland."
The House of Créhange
The castle is actually a collection of several fortified houses built by different noble families on the same rock. The most famous is the House of Créhange, which has been carefully restored. Inside, you can see how the rooms were fitted into the jagged cliffside, creating high, narrow spaces with windows that look straight down into the village and the surrounding forests.
A Landmark for Hikers
Because of its location, Larochette is a natural stop for anyone hiking the Müllerthal Trail. The site is rugged and open, offering some of the best viewpoints in the region. Unlike more polished restorations, Larochette feels raw, giving a real sense of how these medieval structures were carved directly into the natural landscape.
Larochette is a solid, impressive stop in eastern Luxembourg. It is a place where the medieval stonework and the natural rock of the cliff face become almost indistinguishable.
